Internet of Things? What Things?

Internet of Things (IoT)

What is IOT and why is it in my things?

Well, let's clarify that the internet is not in your things... not really. Internet of things, according to the class lectures, "[...] consists of computing devices imbedded in everyday objects [...] enabling them to send and receive data." There are two categories that IoT devices can be put in Smart home and connected home. A smart home is a device that serves as a hub for all devices within a home. On the other hand, connected devices are multiple devices in use within a home. These days we have many sources of Iot in our homes. Now, we have smart refrigerators, smart ovens, and even smart clocks. I used to think this was all because we were lazy but i have now noticed that a lot of the appeal is in personalization. A smart watch, for example, can track your fitness and give you tips on how to optimize your workout. A smart fridge can see what groceries you need to buy and if you are bored, maybe you can scroll on instagram as you wait for your coffee on your timed coffee maker. Smart phones have begun to seem like yesterday as new technology is introduced.

  So.. why are they important?

If IoT continues to advance and as they become more connected, we could be dealing with ultra speed internet. Meaning the next time you ask your Alexa for the weather, it would feel like you're talking to a person. Quick question equals a quick answer, hopefully. However, data cannot be transferred to different IoT devices within a home. According to a study done by Sarah Turner and others, "The responses from customer services for all data controllers said it was not possible to import data directly from one data controller to another." This would mean your services could not personalize across devices. This in itself could be an incentive for homes to have more IoT devices thus resulting in a mass surplus in demand creating a more tech savvy world we would live in.

We are living in an age where technology is swiftly growing and it won't stop anytime soon. IoT will take over because we love the personalization aspect of our devices. We can make it our own and express ourselves, something we all aspire to do. IoT and our human desire to express mesh so well together. Sooner or later, we will all could not live without assistant that is Internet of Things.

  1. I love technology and how innovative humans are with it. Technology makes one's life easier and more comfortable. However, I do think technology makes us lazier and too dependable on it. I myself would not get a smart fridge or Alexa. I would like to remain as "old school" as possible. I think technology could be dangerous in many ways. It has a lot of pros and cons in my personal opinion. I pick and choose which technology works for me. That is the beauty of it. There is so much going on that we can decide to have it all or not at all.

  2. Hi, I really liked your blog post! I didn't realize that smart homes and the Alexa were apart of the Internet of Things until I listened to the lecture(s). I don't know if I would invest in a smart fridge or a smart clock. I've seen some pretty interesting smart home electronics online like a smart mirror. I wonder if you can tweet from a smart fridge? I'm sure IoT will take over at some point, especially because a lot of things are going digital.

  3. Hey Charlize, I really loved reading your blog post. It was insightful and beyond helpful. I think you did a great job explaining what IoT is and how it can be useful. Showing my parents how to get used to using smart items was hard at first because I couldn’t explain at the time how each device can be useful to them at the time, but this was perfect!
